ULTRASOUND & INFRA RED THERAPY

.

The Muscular & Skeletal Clinic has ultrasound and infra-red machines used in conjunction with the treatment of certain soft tissue injuries and pain.
Therapeutic ultrasound and infra-red are treatments commonly used in physical therapy. They are used to provide deep heating to soft tissues in the body.
Deep heating tendons, muscles or ligaments increases circulation to those tissues, which is thought to help the healing process. Increasing tissue temperature with ultrasound and infra-red is also used to help decrease pain through the analgesic effect of the heat.
Deep heating can be used to increase the "stretchiness" of muscles and tendons that may be tight. If you have shoulder pain and have been diagnosed with a frozen shoulder, your physical therapist may use ultrasound and/or infra-red to help improve the extensibility of the tissues around your shoulder prior to performing a range of exercises and/or hands on treatment. This may help improve the ability of your shoulder to stretch.

Some common complaints where your physical therapist is likely to use ultrasound and/or infra-red may include:
• Bursitis
• Tendonitis
• Muscle strains and tears
• Frozen Shoulder
• Sprains and ligament injuries
• Joint contracture or tightness
• Back pain
• Neck pain
• Rotator cuff tears
• Knee meniscus tears
• Ankle sprains
• Golfers elbow
• Repetitive strain injuries
Generally speaking, any soft-tissue injury in the body may be a candidate for ultrasound and/or infra-red therapy.
